The Rapide E might be the first-ever Aston Martin with all-electric propulsion, but Lagonda will take the lead in the coming years. Exhibited for two days in London, the two vehicles are the first steps towards all-encompassing electrification from the British automaker.
“We have worked hard to ensure the high-performance standards of our customers are met,” said John Caress, the vehicle line director for the Rapide E. The thing is, Aston Martin couldn’t do better than over 200 miles of range and 65 kWh of battery capacity. In comparison to Tesla, the Brits have a long way to go until they’ll become a force to be reckoned with.

Rated at 610 PS (602 horsepower) and 950 Nm (701 pound-feet) of torque, the Rapide E will be built in limited numbers. Only 155 examples of the breed will ever be made, and pricing is available on request. The luxo-EV is certainly more expensive than likes of the Rapide AMR, which used to retail at $240,000 excluding destination and delivery.

First presented in 2018, the Vision Concept from Lagonda promises “a new kind of luxury mobility.” Production is planned to commence in 2021, serving as the more exclusive half-brother of the DBX. A bold statement in terms of design, the Vision Concept has been configured to accept solid-state batteries that could enable a range of up to 400 miles between charges.

“Lagonda will be entirely strategic in its approach to technology, using it as a means to attain its goal of creating the world's first ultra-modern luxury cars, and never as an end in itself,” said Andy Palmer, president and chief executive officer of Aston Martin Lagonda.

More importantly, the Brits haven’t lost their love for internal combustion or the good ol’ manual transmission. The next generation of the Vanquish, which will transition to a mid-engine design, will feature an electrified V6 and a three-pedal setup in 2022.

A few months before the launch of the Vanquish, towards the end of 2021, the Valhalla hypercar is expected to enter the scene with e-AWD, an eight-speed DCT, and close to 1,000 horsepower.
