Back in 2009, the Aston Martin Lagonda Concept – based on the platform of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class X164 - was being launched with bells and whistles at the Geneva Motor Show and it was set to preview a future revival of the Lagonda brand.
Four years later, the model hasn't reached production, the GL-Class is now at its second generation and the Lagonda brand hasn't been revived.
This hasn't stopped the cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin though, with an agreement between AMG and the Gaydon manufacturer having been signed this year.
Not only that, but Aston Martin Chairman and CEO Urlich Bez recently had a chat with Autocar and divulged that the project is still part of their plans, only that it will be slightly different.
Apparently, Lagonda will be revived as an Aston Martin model, not as a brand, in the following years, and its platform will probably be shared with the Mercedes-Benz M-Class/GL-Class.
Last month we told you about the upcoming C190 project from Mercedes-Benz, which will borrow its platform to the entire upcoming Aston Martin lineup, thus replacing the aging V/H architecture. It seems that it will share its duties with the Mercedes-Benz large SUV platform, so not a single future Aston Martin model will be based on a British platform anymore.
