Aston Martin's Lagonda concept, the British manufacturer’s attempt to bring back the legendary brand, has had quite the tumultuous past. In September of 2010, we found out that it was getting killed off, due in part to negative feedback from the general public and automotive journalists.
After that reports initially indicated that it would be based on the Mercedes GL, and afterwards that they would forgo the SUV version in favor of a large saloon.

But Aston Martin already has the Rapide four-door saloon, and it’s clear where the general market is heading. Both Bentley and Lamborghini are willing to build large SUVs, aimed unashamedly at buyers in the Arab and Chinese markets.

AutoCar also reports that the Lagonda is coming, and that Aston has given it a high priority. The first all-new vehicle the British automaker will launch is of course the DBS or DB9 coming next year. But despite the popularity of the vehicle, the appeal of a low coupe is limited in this day and age.

So the it looks like a super-luxury 4x4 is on the way under the Lagonda name. The model will of course be aimed at the growing Chinese market, where the SUV segment outperformed the general market four times in 2011.
