During only his fourth lap of the famous race track, Danish driver Allan Simonsen tragically lost his life due to a severe crash in his number 95 Aston Martin race car.
The 34-year-old was rushed by medics to facilities near the track but his condition was too serious. After starting first in the LM GTE Am class, Simonsen's car appeared to snap sharply in the Tertre Rouge corner due to damp road conditions and probably cold tires. His car smashed into a steel barrier at high speed.
Officials let the safety car onto the track for almost an hour after the incident occurred.
"In a serious condition, Allan Simonsen was transferred immediately to the Circuit Medical Centre where he died soon after due to his injuries. Allan Simonsen’s family has been informed immediately by David Richards, Principal of the Aston Martin Racing team," race officials have said.
