Aston Martin managed to take media by surprise at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, and we’re not referring to the hardcore Vulcan track-demon. They also presented the DBX, an all-electric prototype hinting at a luxury crossover but some people wanted it turned into a shooting brake.
By some people we mean ‘automotive manipulator’ Theophilus Chin, an old acquaintance of ours. It turns out that he wasn’t very happy with his Bentley EXP Shooting Brake renderings and decided to have a go at another British big-name carmaker. His choice was the Aston Martin DBX concept and it's pretty clear that the final result speaks for itself.
Since what we saw in Geneva managed to stay faithful to the company’s roots and DNA while embracing a generous touch of modern design cues, we would expect the same from Theophilus Chin. The designer duly delivered but instead of that GTesque rear end, he opted for a stretched back.
The taillights have retained their original shape and design, but the discrete ducktail-looking integrated spoiler went up a bit, on the edge of the roofline. Upon first seeing the pictures, we though we’d seen this shooting brake approach somewhere else. Then we had a flashback with the Aston Martin Virage Shooting Brake Zagato.
Anyway, the overall design language implemented by Theophilus Chin kind of looks good paired with the prototype’s high ground clearance and massive wheels, although the market has so many niches at the moment that it’s really hard to tell between acceptable and strange.
