Great news for (filthy rich) James Bond enthusiasts. Carmaker Aston Martin is working on 28 brand new replicas of the famous DB5 driven by Sir Sean Connery in the 1964 installment of the 007 franchise, Goldfinger.
This will not be just any Aston Martin DB5: it will be almost the exact car James Bond got to fight the bad guys in, gadgets and all, the carmaker says in a press release.
That means that with a classic, gorgeous car, one will get awesome, 007-worthy specs like revolving number plates, a bulletproof screen in the back and even tire shredders and pop-up machine guns. However, those last two on the list will be just for show, not actual weapons. For obvious reasons.
Also missing from the replicas will be the ejector seat, which was one of the features James Bond had on his car and used with great success. Aston Martin says it can’t incorporate it for safety reasons, but would be tempted to include one for a collector looking to further customize his new set of wheels.
As was to be expected, all the tweaks will add to the £3.3million starting price on the car. Bear in mind that, for this kind of money, you get a vehicle that is not road legal, so it’s truly a collector’s piece.
The new DB5s are result of a partnership with EON Productions, the longtime James Bond producers, and special effects supervisor Chris Corbould. They will use the blueprints of the 1964 car and will be made at the Aston Martin factory in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire.
All 28 cars will come with silver birch color bodywork, just like Bond’s, and will hit the market in the first half of 2020. Only 25 of them will be commercially available: Aston Martin plans to keep one car, EON Productions will get another, and a third one will be auctioned for charity.
“The connection between Aston Martin and James Bond is something of which we are very proud,” Aston Martin boss Andy Palmer says. “It is remarkable that the DB5 remains the definitive James Bond car after so many years.”
“To own a Silver Birch DB5, complete with gadgets and built to the highest standards in the very same factory as the original James Bond cars? That is surely the ultimate collectors’ fantasy,” he adds.
