Aston Martin and one of the most prestigious contemporary artists in the UK, Robi Walters, have partnered up for a unique project that will turn upcycling into art.
As of September 18, Robi Walters has become the official artist-in-residence at Aston Martin and will spend the next 12 months developing art projects using junk from the 3 production sites at Gaydon, St. Athan and Newport Pagnell. Aston Martin doesn’t say what these projects will be, but they do say this: Aston Martin’s Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman will be personally involved in one of them.
They also mention that the artist will be using discarded materials from the production sites to create art that will immortalize a defining moment in the history of the British marque. Yes, they are referring to the production of the first Aston Martin SUV, the DBX.
“I have been a car lover ever since I was a child. For me, Aston Martin has always been iconic and the pinnacle of automotive design - they make beautiful cars, which are themselves incredible works of art and now after visiting the factory, and meeting some of the team, I am incredibly inspired by the spirit of Aston Martin,” Walters says. “I am so thrilled and excited about this partnership. To work closely with Marek Reichman developing creative projects and making pieces of art from materials that don’t make it into the iconic sports cars will push me into new areas as an artist and I just can’t wait.”
Reichman adds that, “We are thrilled to be working with Robi as he is an exceptionally talented artist. I’ve always believed that it is stimulating for all of my design team to be exposed to different forms of art and design so this is an exciting collaboration for Aston Martin.”
To further boost interest in the partnership, Aston Martin has released the preview available below. It’s intriguing and very beautiful looking, for what it’s worth, but it doesn’t give away anything of the future collaboration. So keep an eye on this space for more details, when they come.
