Introduced in 1967, the superb Toyota 2000GT is regarded as the first true Asian-developed sportscar. Built in only 351 examples, the 2-door fastback is highly collectible and, as of last month, it’s the most expensive Asian production car.
And we’re not talking about the unique cabriolet version driven by Sean Connery while he was portraying James Bond, but a perfect coupe example that was sold by RM Auctions for nearly $1.15 million (€880,000).
Some say it’s a rather small figure when compared to the tens of millions grabbed by certain Bugatti or Ferrari models, but we’re still talking about a historical event for the Japanese company. What really impressive is that the 2000GT’s price has doubled in two years, with another 1967 example being sold in March 2011 for $650,000 (€499,400).
For those who don’t know much about this car, the 2000GT was powered by a dual overhead cam 2.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine with three Solex 2-barrel carburetors rated at 150 HP. Mated to a 5-speed manual overdrive transmission, the Japanese sportscar was capable of a top speed of almost 140 mph (225 km/h).
All told, this particular version, which is an original left-hand drive US-delivery example, is plain gorgeous and was beautifully restored. Take a few moments to see the pictures uploaded in our photo gallery section below.
