Artists Turns 4-Line Highway into a Musical Stave, and Its Sounds Good

Music makes people come together, and Madonna couldn’t have said it better, but we’re in petrol-land here, there’s no other instrument than a vee-eight car burning proper rubber. Thanks to the power of the world wide internet, however, an artist managed to find a way around this issue, turning a regular busy highway into an opera.
A couple of years back, Brazilian artist Jarbas Agnelli made a picture of a group of birds perched on electrical wires. He wanted to see what would happen if he turned these birds into notes on a stave.

But first, just a small interruption. We’d like to mention that the staff or stave regularly needs five horizontal lines and four spaces that each represents a different musical pitch.

Good. Now, the video below is the brainchild of the same artist, who has now used images taken from a highway in New York. While the birds were sitting on the wires, thus becoming notes, this time the vehicles would drive in the equivalent of the four spaces that each stave has. So far, things remain accurate.

Agnelli believes there’s music in nature, in the city and humans, the only problem is for us to identify it. Based on that principle, this busy highway now becomes a giant musical score. It may not be The Phantom of The Opera type of work, but it could be seen as a musical structure.

Sure, it’s a matter of taste, and you’re going to have to listen to it to make an impression. As far as we can tell, the artist used different frames of the highway footage as separate measures, therefore obtaining a line for each of the instrument. You have the lead, bass, drums, claps, synth, all put together.

However, no special effects were used; no cars were copied or/and added and no speed changes have been applied. Apparently, the only thing Agnelli did was to edit and arrange the piece into something that makes musical sense.
