Artists Chop a 747 Jumbo Jet to Create Art Car for Burning Man Festival

When it’s in the skies, the Jumbo Jet is easily the world’s most recognizable aircraft, but few folks could ever imagine this humongous airplane transform into an art car. Believe it or not we’ve stumbled upon some of these rare breeds and found out they are already working on transforming the flying machine into a “giant, movable interactive experience” for this year’s Burning Man art festival.

Backed up by Big Imagination Foundation, an non-profit organization that incubates and supports projects that are inspiring and visionary, the 747 Project’s purpose is to modify a real Jumbo Jet into a giant, movable interactive experience for the week-long event that takes place every summer in northern Nevada, US. It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy, which is set alight on Saturday evening.

It’s supposed to be an experiment in community, art, radical self-expression and radical self-reliance, but others name it a fun yard for rich people. Either way, when the folks organizing the Burning Man event say they “will bring experiences to people in grand, awe-inspiring and joyful ways that lift the human spirit, address social problems and inspire a sense of culture, community and personal engagement” they sure mean it.

One of this year’s projects or whatever you want to call it caught our attention instantly. Over 100 volunteers are currently working together, under the careful lead of a couple of engineer-brainiacs, to transform a 3 stories tall, 4 busses wide and half a football field long craft. The airplane/art car will carry over 300 people along the dessert through what is supposed to be a unique experience.

Our goal is to move participants in many ways, to take them on a trip not only from point A to point B, but also from the outer self to the inner self,” the people involved in the project explain. We don’t know what you think of this, but all we can see is a group of rich punks that will cut the wings of a jet to turn it into a true party boat.

PS: The picture above is a rendering on how the project should turn out.
