For more than a year, Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg has been skipping school on Fridays to protest against politicians not taking action to stop climate change, inspiring millions of other teens and grown-ups around the world.
This week, Thunberg gave a U.N. address in which she accused world’s political leaders of robbing her of her future by putting financial considerations over everything else, further deepening the current environmental crisis. To give the address, she had sailed on a zero-emissions yacht for 2 weeks from her home country to New York, U.S., hoping her journey would be seen as an example of alternate means of transport to gas-guzzling jets.
Her millions of followers around the world include celebrities, among which is also former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The “Terminator” actor is no stranger to the cause, often leaning into his huge following to urge people to choose electric vehicles over the conventional gasoline models. He’s not just a big fan of Greta’s: he even offered to lend her his car.
The admission comes from Greta herself, during an interview for the Skavlan talk show, which was shot in NYC and will air in full today, September 27. She doesn’t say whether Schwarzenegger would have lend her his electric Hummer, which he helped design with Kreisel in 2017, but she mentions she turned him down.
“One of the funniest offers I've received is that Arnold Schwarzenegger has offered me to lend his electric car if I want to,” Greta tells host Fredrik Skavlan. She doesn’t explain her reasons for turning the offer down or why she found the offer “funny.”
The suggestion didn’t come completely out of thin air, though. In May 2019, both Schwarzenegger and Greta attended a climate conference in Austria and they got to pose for a picture and exchange a few words. The actor and former bodybuilder declared himself to be positively “starstruck” with the teen, which, admittedly, doesn’t happen all that often.
