Body builder, actor, ex Governor of California and among all a really cool guy, Arnold Schwarzenegger recently took one of his great fleet of Hummers on the road to have lunch, in LA. Besides the actual color, the H1 is a nature-friendly machine considering the actor got it converted to run on hydrogen.
While the 66-year old celebrity is getting his buff physique ready for the long-expected sequel to the 1984 original, “Terminator: Genesis,” it seems his passion for big and strong rides is still alive and kicking.
The famous action star was seen driving his old school H1 in Los Angeles, California. However, that is quite the ordinary considering his great passion for off-roaders. Well, that is when he’s not choosing the sports cars.
In fact, it’s mostly about the extremes with this fellow. He was seen holding the wheel of an old Ferrari 360 Spider, a 911 Turbo and a Dodge Challenger. And shortly after, he switched back to one of the trucks his car-collection includes, like the old school Military Jeep or the Mercedes-Benz Unimog.
Most of his fans probably already know about what this guy likes to put his hands on, but how many of you realize that Schwarzenegger is in fact an environment-activist. He bought the first Hummer manufactured for civilian use in 1992, a model so large, 6,300 lb (2,900 kg) and 7 feet (2.1 m) wide, that it is classified as a large truck and U.S. fuel economy regulations do not apply to it. However, during the gubernatorial recall campaign he announced that he would convert one of his Hummers to burn hydrogen.
The conversion was reported to have cost about $21,000. After election, he signed an executive order to jump-start the building of Hydrogen refueling plants called the California Hydrogen Highway Network, and gained a U.S Department of Energy grant to help pay for its projected $91 million cost. California took delivery of the first H2H (Hydrogen Hummer) in October 2004.
Arnold also founded the R2O regions of Climate Change initiative, one that promotes a low-carbon economy, an idea he talks about frequently. In fact, the Terminator star has said people should be free to drive big cars and enjoy all-day jacuzzis without feeling bad about the environmental impact, as long as they know they can be part of the solution by changing the technology in the car.
