He may be busy promoting the latest installment of the Terminator saga, but nothing will stop one of the best action actors in Hollywood to make an eco-conscious statement whenever he has the chance. This time around, the green show-off comes with a double premiere: first time for Arnold Schwarzenegger as an NASCAR pace car driver, first time a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle was used.
For the NASCAR non-believers out there, we’ll mention the Toyota/Save Mart 350 is a 218.9 miles (352.3 km) Sprint Cup Series event held annually at Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point, in California. It joined the NASCAR circuit in 1989, and it went through several changes ever since.

Still, like any other race of the kind, this one too needs a pace car which (until Google or someone else ruins that for us too) it needs a driver, of course. Since this year’s race used the 2016 Toyota Mirai vehicle, the organizers figured Arnie would be the best to fill in the shoes. After all, as Governor Schwarzenegger championed and established California’s Hydrogen Highway, the nation’s first network of hydrogen fueling stations.

It will be an honor to lead these fantastic athletes and champions around the raceway, and on top of it, I get to drive a car that is both powerful and green,” The Terminator star said in a press release earlier this month. How green? The Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle that emits only water from its exhaust. Is that green enough, Greenpeace?

Sure, we all know that Schwarzenegger drives a Bugatti Veyron on a daily basis, but you know how they say, “you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.”
