A mishap with an armored truck made it rain on a New Jersey highway the other day. Rutherford Police report at least 2 crashes and other minor fender benders, and a major traffic backup, as people scrambled out of their cars to catch the flying money.
As ABC7 NY puts it, despite how this may have looked to the people who happened to drive by just then, this wasn’t free money. We all know there’s no such thing as free money (in life, in general), and this is no exception: though police are unable to say at this point just how much money was lost, they’re looking to retrieve every cent of it.
The incident occurred in East Rutherford, near the MetLife Stadium. Footage shot by passers-by and shared on social media show the chaos that erupted when people realized that what was flying out the back of that truck was money. Drivers rushed out of their cars and onto the highway, desperate to catch as many bills as possible and stuff them in their pockets.
The police are not saying yet what caused the incident, but ABC7 NY cites one eyewitness as saying that the driver was absolutely “distraught” that it had happened on his watch. Reports claim that there may have been an issue with the lock on the back door, which made it open while the truck was on the road, making it rain. The armored truck belonged to Brinks, which says for the same media outlet: “We can confirm that there was an incident with one of our trucks this morning, which we are investigating."
Rutherford Police are asking people who have any knowledge of this or footage to share to come forward, in a bid to get back the entire amount lost. ABC says that people are cooperating by coming forward with videos. Sharing them on social media to brag about seeing it happen doesn’t count as “cooperating,” however.
