BMW was and will forever be a trailblazer, a pioneer. Ever since we can remember, our favorite brand was on top of innovation and always brought new cars and even invented new segments.
Nowadays, the propeller badged manufacturer is trying to cover every possible niche and created some new cars in order to achieve this ambitious goal. The most recent car that made history in this regard was the X6, launched in 2008.

However, the German company decided to launch yet another so-called Sports Activity Coupe this year, the X4, a smaller version of the already famous and quite popular E71 X6. With these 2 models, BMW has absolutely no competition from its main rivals.

The two German competitors that are still pondering over how to fight the Bimmer dominance have yet to reveal a new model. Audi and Mercedes have been preparing (for a while now) some new SUV-like cars to keep the Bavarian dominance at bay.

Audi is planning an all new Q6 to pick up the fight with the X6 and things are going to heat up. However, the new model from the Ingolstadt based manufacturer will be coming out, most likely, in 2016, due to the Volkswagen part-sharing philosophy. The new model in the Q range will share the platform with the next-gen Q5.

As for Mercedes, the only possible contra-candidate will be the future MLC but we can't really be sure when this new crossover SUV will come out. Initial info claims it to be somewhere in 2014 but that's still just a rumor.

How about the X4 then? The MLC and Q6 will definitely be competing with the X6 but BMW will be releasing the smaller X4 later on this year. What will Mercedes and Audi do about this new model? Will they leave it without competition?

It seems like Mercedes will not concede this segment. They are planning a the GLC, a sporty, more aggressive version of the popular GLK. Audi, on the other hand, thinks that there not enough space between the Q5 and Q3 to offer an intermediate car, like a possible Q4 to compete with the new Bimmer.

That means that the X4 will face little to no competition in this segment, and all will depend on Merc's new GLC. However, since the Bimmer is way ahead in production and will probably hit the markets before the Coupe GLK, it's highly probable that until the Stuttgart based company makes its move, it's going to be too late.
