BMW was and still is more and more preoccupied with allowing its customers to use their phone to its full potential. That's why the Bavarian company teamed up with a lot of software and app developers to create the best possible apps you could wish for.
Recent rumors say that Apple wants to enter a whole new era once iOS 7 hits the market. According to 9to5mac.com, the Cupertino based company wants to allow its customers to use Apple maps and Siri inside their cars but on a whole new level.
The future service will have to actually display the Apple maps on the car's navigation screen. Furthermore, Siri could be used without opening the phone. At the moment, we know for sure that Apple is working on an 'Eyes-Free' Siri service that allows you to talk to your phone without waking it up but the next version will be integrated into the car's systems.
However, before these new optional features will be available on BMWs, a lot more work has to be done. Apple's maps are not accurate enough for the moment and Siri needs some improvements in the speech recognition area. All in all, those problems will be solved at one point but iOS 7 seems too close.
At the moment we know for sure that Apple is working with BMW and other manufacturers (including Toyota, Audi, Honda and Land Rover) to create the 'Eyes-Free' service for Siri and that is a strong indicator that the American company's plans might work out in the end.
Even more importantly, Apple might get involved in developing in-car infotainment systems. It is a well known fact that Apple's Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue (who is now in charge of Siri and Maps) is also a member in Ferrari's Board of Directors. Future plans might even bring Ford and GM car console systems exclusively made by Steve Jobs' company. After all, new Ferraris do come fitted with iPad Minis and Tesla Model S already comes with a tablet in between the front seats.
Bearing in mind that the BMW iDrive received a lot of criticism for its complicated design and tricky functions, we might even see the Apple software patched to future cars from Bavaria.
