While Google's autonomous car prototypes have already become meme topics, things are more complicated when it comes to Apple. The Mac makers have been rumored to be preparing a car for a few years now, but we only have rumors to work on. Well, those rumors have just intensified, as the company has registered the Apple.Car domain.
The database of registered domain names, Whois, shows that Apple has registered apple.car, apple.cars, and apple.auto, as MacRumors writes. The URLs were registered via MarkMonitor Inc. in December 2015. In the usual smoke and mirrors take mentioned above, Apple hasn't put the domains to work so far, so you shouldn't jump to conclusions yet.
Back in September last year, the rumor mill talked about Apple gathering a workforce of 600 with the aim of boosting Project Titan activity, with this obviously implying the project had been given the green light. For one thing, Apple has been on a head-hunting spree, hiring people from Tesla Motors, Fiat Chrysler, as well as battery developer A123 Systems.
On the other hand, the domains mentioned above could be a development set to be included in the company's CarPlay infotainment system, which is currently in the midst of an expansion process that sees it being implemented on cars from more and more brands.
Given Apple's take on the hardware world, should the company ever come up with a vehicle, expect this to be quite the opposit of Google's humble-looking car. Only time will tell if your status-savvy neighbor will be seen inside an iCar one day.
