Apple is looking into so many ways to upgrade its iPhones; not a long time ago, it was discovered the Cupertino-based tech giant was considering another controversial change on its smartphone.
The kind of change that feels just natural after the demise of the headphone jack and the removal of the charger from the iPhone box, that is.
According to one report citing sources familiar with the matter, Apple is still considering an iPhone without any ports, though for the time being, it’s still not clear when it is supposed to launch.
A portless iPhone is theoretically an iPhone that has zero physical connection options, meaning it’d even give up on the Lightning connector that requires Apple’s proprietary cable. For charging, this iPhone would require wireless charging exclusively, while for data transfers, you’d have to stick with methods no longer relying on a cable.
There’s another collateral victim of an iPhone without any ports: CarPlay. Without the Lightning port, this iPhone would only support wireless CarPlay, but right now, there are maybe millions of cars out there still using the wired version. All are lacking wireless CarPlay support, and this means such an iPhone would be impossible to use in all these cars. Given most head units supporting wired CarPlay also come with wired Android Auto, don't be too surprised if users migrate en-masse to Google's platform if Apple gives them no other option.
