Apple CarPlay Quietly Updated with a Feature You May Not Even Notice

Apple releases further refinements for CarPlay every once in a while without any official announcements, and by the looks of things, such an update was quietly shipped sometimes this month.
As many CarPlay users probably noticed, iOS 13 introduces better support for widescreen displays, which means that Apple’s system now uses the available screen estate more efficiently.

But more recently, CarPlay has also introduced additional polishing to the navigation experience, so now apps like Apple Maps and Google Maps boast larger panels for the ETA and the displayed directions.

This is without a doubt something that’s easy to miss when using CarPlay, but on the other hand, it’s a small update that certainly comes in handy especially on HUDs with widescreens.

And of course, given these panels are larger, it makes it much easier to observe certain information, such as the arrival time, the time and distance left to destination, as well as the directions drivers need to follow to reach a route.

Some users claim they noticed this small update in Apple Maps earlier this year, but on the other hand, it’s now going live in Google Maps as well. Most likely, users with widescreens should notice a similar change in the Google-owned Waze as well.

The refined experience with CarPlay is only available on iPhones running iOS 13, but by this time, the majority of Apple devices should already be updated to this version since the launch took place in the fall of 2019. According to Apple figures, 77% of the devices launched in the last four years already use iOS 13. Overall, 70% of all supported devices have already been updated to this new version of the operating system.

A new iOS update that introduces a bunch of new features, including support for showing third-party maps app, like Google Maps, on the dashboard, is expected to go live for iPhones later this month. A beta build previewing these features is already available for download.
