Apple’s CarPlay is a fantastic system when it works, as it allows you to interact with key features of the phone hands-free while also bringing apps like navigation and music players on the bigger screen in your cars.
But as some people discovered the hard way, CarPlay isn’t always working as expected, and MINI owners know this very well.
Several of them have noticed CarPlay went missing a few weeks ago, and it’s believed the update to iOS 14.2 is the one causing the whole thing. As we reported earlier today, the new iOS 14.3 is believed to bring things back to normal, though, in the case of MINI owners, there’s one easy toggle that restores the functionality of the app in the car.
First and foremost, MINI drivers explain in this thread on Apple’s forums that CarPlay just went missing, and not even the dealership managed to bring it back.
“I have the same exact issue. My 2020 Mini CarPlay stopped working on Monday. I've tried restarting my phone, unpairing my phone and removing it from the car, resetting network settings and non of these worked for me. I've even updated the car's firmware with no luck. From what I can see, the option to pair through CarPlay no longer appears on the car's display. Upon trying to establish a new connection, it does so through a non-CarPlay connection requiring the use of the built-in media and navigation apps rather than CarPlay,” one MINI owner says.
And while everybody is waiting for an official fix to be announced (at this point, we’re also waiting for a confirmation iOS 14.3 resolves the CarPlay problem), someone has found an easy fix. It all comes down to a simple toggle that is available right on the head unit.
“On the car display, I went to My MINI > System settings > Mobile devices > Settings. What I found was that the checkbox for Apple CarPlay has reappeared but it was unchecked. I only had to re-enable it and set up a new device like I usually do and that solved it!” one MINI owner explained.
Neither Apple nor MINI commented on these CarPlay struggles so far.
