Apple Car “Beta Version” Due in 2022 as Apple, Hyundai Deal Expected by March

While Apple has never confirmed the Apple Car, or Project Titan as it’s internally called, every big step the company makes towards the mass production of this vehicle quickly makes the headlines.

And this time, the tidbit that leaked to the web concerns the partnership with Hyundai and which the South Korean manufacturer spilled the beans on a few days ago.

According to a report from Korea IT News cited by Reuters, Hyundai and Apple are expected to sign a partnership on autonomous electric cars by March, after which the two can begin focusing on the actual production of the highly anticipated Apple Car.

While the vehicle won’t get the green light by 2024, with the mass production to thus kick off in some three years, a so-called “beta version” of the Apple Car is likely to see the daylight as soon as 2022.

This is obviously a prototype prepared by Apple and Hyundai in an attempt to test the technology supposed to power the production model, though it remains to be seen if the two want to do the whole thing publicly or keep everything away from our eyes and ears. Judging from Apple’s typical modus operandi, there’s a good chance the company would stick with its FBI-like secrecy for the Apple Car too, although we can all see the whole thing hasn’t really worked until now.

Today’s report claims Apple and Hyundai are planning to build the Apple Car in the United States at Kia’s factory in Georgia. The backup plan is a completely new facility the two would build in the United States, though for now, a final decision is yet to be made.

No matter which way the two end up going, the production target appears to be 100,000 cars in 2024, after which the output is supposed to be gradually expanded to 400,000 units every year.

Of course, neither Apple nor Hyundai commented on this report, so expect more information to leak soon through unofficial channels.
