Anything Could Happen on Sunday - Alonso

With main title rival Mark Webber behind him on the Abu Dhabi grid tomorrow, one might argue that Fernando Alonso’s task in the season finale – grabbing his 3rd world title, that is – just got easier. Yet the Spaniard insisted that his place on the grid for the Sunday race changes nothing.

“I think we are more or less in the same situation as we were two days ago before first practice. We know the situation, we know the four contenders,” said Alonso after the qualifying session, during which he was outqualified by Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, both active rivals in the title hunt.

“I think everything is on tomorrow's race, anything can happen and we saw in last few events things changed - in Korea the Red Bulls were very strong and lost the race with mechanical issues, in Brazil we saw some problems with pitstops.”

In the race anything can happen, we need to complete 55 laps without any problems. It will be a tough race, a long race, but we are in a position where we are very strong,” he added.

Additionally, Alonso hinted that he could have done better on Saturday and finish the session closer to 1st placed Vettel, but traffic prevented him from scoring high-end lap times. In his last run, the Spaniard managed to overcome his early difficulties and jumped from 5th to 3rd overall, bringing some type of exaltation in the Ferrari garage.

The first attempt was not great, traffic in the first sector so I knew with the second tires there was some potential to come so I pushed to the limit and third place is great,” concluded Alonso.
