Another Yamaha TDM Sketch, Iwata Is Brewing Something Up

It looks like the house of Iwata may be indeed brewing something up in the adventure-ish bike segment, as the German magazine Motorrad has published a new sketch of how the new Yamaha TDM could look like. Industry rumors say that Yamaha is indeed working on a new generation of TDM machines, possibly surfacing one this fall at either the Intermot or the EICMA shows.

The sketch Motorrad publishes is not the first TDM rendering we came across. In mid-June, Oberdan Bezzi has delivered his own vision of how could the new Yamaha could look, as well. However, the two renderings are following two different approaches. Bezzi’s machine is much closer to the lines of the actual TDM, with several new takes on more modern lines and upgraded architecture, yet remaining faithful to the overall design cues of the popular machine.

The Motorrad version of the TDM is more on the off-road side, not at all shy to show off the edgy design elements of the XT660Z and looks better suited for riding on rougher terrain. Unlike the Bezzi TDM, which comes with road-oriented cast wheels, Motorrad ‘s machine is equipped with wire spoked ones, obviously better for when the going gets tough.

While the two bikes are pure speculations and the result of their creators’ imagination, one thing can be said with almost full certainty: if Yamaha decides to unveil a new TDM bike in the upper-middleweight segment, it will most likely not be another parallel-twin machine. The new crossplane triple-cylinder engine is performing quite well and is one of the lightest in its class. Or maybe Yamaha could use revised MT-07 and MT-09 platforms for revealing two TDM models with different engines.

Even though some say this would be a tad too much, they should not forget that more models based on a single platform is a very lucrative idea… which is already put to work in Yamaha’s naked all-rounder segment. Remember the Transalp 400 and 600 versions?
