Another Tesla Model S P85D Victim: Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S 4Matic

Recent rumors claim that the fastest accelerating sedan in the world, the Tesla Model S P85D will get a firmware update that will make it even faster. The thing is, it’s already hard to find a car that can keep up with it from a standstill.

Not too long ago we saw a 707 HP coupe being laughed at by the EV, when a Hellcat failed to win in a drag race against it. Admittedly, that was a rear-wheel drive car. So how would an all-wheel drive one fair?

To find out, we’re showing you this drag race between the Tesla and a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S 4Matic model. If you’re not on par with Mercedes-Benz lingo, we’ll tell you what that name means.

It translates into a blazing fast sedan. The Merc uses a 5.5-liter Biturbo V8 that in S guise makes 585 HP and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. It’s also all-wheel drive and sends the power to the wheels via a 7-speed AMG Speedshift MCT gearbox. Theoretically, it should do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.6 seconds. Impressive, right? Wait till you learn about the Tesla.

Due to its electric powertrain, it can use all of its torque and HP from zero RPM. That means that this all-wheel drive car will send 931 Nm (687 lb-ft) of torque and 691 HP to the ground as soon as you touch the pedal. Therefore, the same 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint will take 3.2 seconds. Yeah, even on paper, the Merc loses.

The outcome of the race is not surprising at all. The Tesla wins it. But it’s the trap speed that we weren’t expecting, the E63 AMG performing better than you might think, posting 120 mph (193 km/h) compared to the 115 mph (185 km/h) of the P85D.
