Another Investment Better than Gold: a BMW E28 M5

A while back we told you that if you're looking for a good investment you should look for a BMW E30. Their rate of profitability surpasses even gold and it will also provide you with a special car to drive around town in.
The guys from Road&Track thought that another great investment, especially for the US, would be a 1988 M5. Even though the E28 M5 was built between 1985 and 1988, the US market received it only in 1988, making it a very rare appearance on Yankee ground.

Of course, you could also look for one in Europe and then bring over to the US but that will definitely cost a lot more and will also take up a lot of your time.

Keeping the investment aspects aside, you'll be getting a car with the same engine used in the only supercar BMW ever made, the M1, a car capable of reaching speeds of up to 150 mph (250 km/h) and that comes with a mechanical rear differential.

Only 1,236 hand-built M5s were brought in the US and this is one of the rarest BMW you'll see on the left side of the Atlantic. However, you really have to be careful when buying one of these.

After all, it is a 25 year-old car and along with high-mileage you'll also get engine problems. You should look out for tired cylinder heads and timing chains. Furthermore, M parts are a bit expensive and hard to get for a car this age. Another aspect you should be extremely careful with is checking for rust around the side sills, wheel arches, trunk and doors.

In case you get your hands on a mint condition one, it will cost you around $18,000 (€13,750) and in case you go for the cheaper alternatives, expect to spend a lot of money on repairs.
