Lately, we have seen more and more Chinese EV companies that are starting to pave the way for their future in this market segment, where a lot of giant carmakers are battling for the electric supremacy.
This latest company, named Atieva, is a start-up that insists on being a car manufacturer, not a design house. Apparently, its main goal is to design a breakthrough electric car in - you’ve guessed it - the heart of Silicon Valley.
Atieva is backed up by Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation, more specifically by Beijing Electric Vehicle Company, a subsidiary of BAIC.
Together with a group of high-profile component and technology suppliers, such as German-based giant Siemens, Korean battery cell manufacturer SK Group and Italian vehicle design specialist CECOMP, the two Chinese companies have some big plans for the future.
They intend on building a range of electric vehicles to be offered for sale globally, and, of course, becoming a serious player in the EV market.
The new concept is to be revealed at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, and as the company officials stated, by building an iconic new vehicle from the ground up, they are redefining what a car can be.
Few technical specs are known about this new car, though. The company claims the new concept will most likely incorporate state-of-the-art battery cell technology and a theoretical range of more than 300 miles. The exterior design, as it can be seen from the teaser pictures, will be sportier and something close to Tesla's Model S.
According to Autocar, Atieva was founded back in 2007 by Tesla’s former vice-president Bernard Tse and Astoria Network founder Sam Weng.
With these new companies, such as Faraday Future which will launch its vehicle at 2016 CES, Shanghai-headquartered NextEV, and now Atieva, China shows clear intentions of becoming a major player in the Electric Vehicle market and these Chinese-backed start-ups may pose as serious contenders for Tesla Motors.
