Android Auto Lost Its Best Music App, Got a Painfully Slow Alternative in Return

YouTube Music is now Google's recommended choice for Android Auto 1 photo

Last year, Google officially discontinued Google Play Music, which was arguably the most popular choice for listening to the favorite tunes behind the wheel and with Android Auto running on the screen.
Google’s strategy was pretty simple: given its investments in YouTube Music, this was the recommended alternative to Google Play Music, so the company even provided users with the necessary tools to migrate all their songs from one service to the other.

Now that Google Play Music is dead, former users who made the switch to YouTube Music have nothing but complaints about the new platform. And one of the most common problems they come across is how slow YouTube Music ends up becoming, especially when it has to deal with large libraries.

Unsurprisingly, this isn’t necessarily something that showed up overnight, as the first users complained about the slow experience with YouTube Music last summer. Little has changed since then, though, and now a thread on Google’s forums has received over 300 upvotes. All of those are from people who aren’t pleased with the slow loading times of YouTube Music on Android Auto.

Totally agree. I have bought a NAS to stream music as a result. I was halfway through listening to all tracks and ‘liking’ the ones I want in my likes playlist, and now just to get down to the Ms. will take hours. It's taken a year to get that far when I could scroll through my songs, and it looks as though I'll have to abandon the project!” someone says on Google’s forums.

For the time being, Google has remained completely tight-lipped regarding these performance problems with YouTube Music, so it’s not yet known if the company plans to do anything about them or not. Most likely, it does, only that all these users struggling with the slow response of YouTube Music running on Android Auto are nothing but disappointed with the app they’re forced to use.
