If you’re using Android Auto to listen to music, no matter the app, you probably noticed that every once in a while, if you rely on steering wheel controls to mute the audio, resuming the playback is no longer possible.
The whole thing appears to happen with Spotify, YouTube Music, and other apps, and users turning to Google’s forums to report the issue claim there’s basically no way to resume the music.
I actually encountered the problem many months ago, so I’m guessing this isn’t something that comes down to Android Auto, but rather to the music apps themselves. The bug only occurs when the steering wheel controls are used to mute the music and pause the playback.
In my case, Spotify was the one affected by the problem, and the normal behavior was restored silently at some point in a software update. I’m not sure a workaround exists, but removing and reinstalling the media apps used for listening to music in Android Auto could actually be worth a try.
“Recently I have discovered that if I use the mute button of my steering wheel which usually stop or resume the music, it's not working properly. Nowadays It just stop but if I click again it never resume music,” someone says on Google’s forums.
By the looks of things, the phone brand or the car model doesn’t make any difference, as this behavior has already been confirmed on Google’s Pixel and OnePlus models. I encountered it on a Samsung Galaxy Note9, so there’s a chance that phones manufactured by the South Korean company are also impacted.
As for the workaround, nothing seems to do the trick for everybody, so it’s all up to you to figure out what could restore the normal behavior. The solutions that are worth a try include clearing the cache and the data of the Android Auto and music player apps, reinstalling these apps, and resetting the connection to the car.
