Android Auto Black Screen After Android 10 Update Is Not a Feature, It’s a Bug

Android Auto no longer working after the update to Android 10 is a known bug that Google itself is investigating, but as it turns out, some are coming across a slightly different issue after installing the latest version of the mobile operating system on their devices.
More specifically, I’m seeing some reports of Android Auto freezing with a black screen despite the phone actually indicating that the connection is established and the app is running.

Those who encounter this problem explain that nothing shows up on their car head unit and Android Auto just turns black a second after plugging in the smartphone. Disconnecting the device restores the OEM interface of the head unit, some say. Waiting is not an option, as the black screen just stays on forever.

The typical workarounds that involves trying out other cables and clearing the cache and data of Android Auto produce no results – worth knowing that in Android 10, Android Auto is offered as OS level, so other generic solutions like uninstalling the app and downgrading to a previous version are much harder now.

So is there any fix for this problem? Not really, albeit I’ve seen some people claiming that a full reset of the phone sometimes resolves the whole thing – this could be an indication that issue is caused by the upgrade to Android 10, so starting from scratch technically resolves it.

The good news is that I’ve seen only a bunch of people coming across this issue, and given that the Android 10 rollout has started a long time, there’s a good chance it’s not a widespread problem.

It remains to be seen if and when Google comes up with a fix, but in the meantime, the only way to go appears to be the super-painful factory reset that allows you to start from scratch on your Android device.
