Americans to Get the Audi Q5 in March

The Audi Q5, an IHG Small SUV vehicle, a class which is forecasted to grow dramatically over the next few years, will make its debut in United States' showrooms this March. The crossover will be powered by a 3.2 V6 FSI direct injection engine outputting 270 horsepower and will benefit from quattro all wheel drive and a six speed Tiptronic transmission.

Audi claims the model has the best-in-class city fuel economy, with an average fuel consumption of 18 mpg (13 l/km). Not half bad, given the claimed 6.7-second sprint to 60 mph or 96.5 km/h and a max 4,400 lbs. of towing capacity. The Q5 was meant as a direct competitor to Acura RDX, BMW X3, Infiniti EX35, Land Rover LR2 HSE, Lexus RX350, Mercedes Benz GLK350, and Volvo XC60.

The new crossover was designed starting from the Audi A4 chassis and was given the longest wheelbase in its class. Its body, measuring 4.63 meters in length and 1.88 meters in width runs on standard 18-inch wheels (235/60 all-season tires). Exterior design features reduced front overhang, LED lighting technology headlights, no roof joint strips for a high visual quality and minimized airflow noises and aluminum hood and tailgate for reduced weight.

The Audi Q5 is equipped with a wide range of entertainment tools, such as voice-recognizing MMI, Dolby Digital 5.1 sound system, steering wheel iPod control, integral hard drive, and even digital 3D navigation screen display. Audi's drive select option is unique to segment and helps the driver customize engine/throttle mapping, transmission shift characteristics, steering, and suspension.

Other options include the Audi parking system with rearview camera, the lane departure warning system, and adaptive cruise control that maintains a constant distance between the car and the vehicle in front.

The new Q5 is to enter a somewhat crowded market and considering the availability details, it will enter the market in the middle of a crisis. With an yet undisclosed price tag, but probably set in the $30,000 – $50,000 range, it remains to be seen whether the model will be able to boost Audi's sales.
