Ambient Lighting for 2012 Ford Focus

American manufacturer Ford is preparing the way for the new Focus at least as meticulously as it did for the Fiesta US launch. From time to time, we learn about more and more features of the model which is expected to re-become a core asset of the car.

Today, Ford is giving us a short insight into a feature which is as useless for the car's performance as it is exciting from the bling-bling lover point of view: ambient lighting. And in the new Focus, the concept is taken to a whole new level.

The carmaker will sell the car equipped with LED interior illumination which can be switched between seven colors. The LEDs are located everywhere (even in the doors, footwells and cupholders) and can be turned on at a flip of switch.

According to Ford, citing research conducted by “a prominent lighting research journal,” ambient lighting helps the driver and its bodily functions. They say even that in-car lighting can improve a driver’s visual senses (of course, this doesn't mean the driver actually sees better, but perceives the interior of the car to be more appealing).

“When LED illumination combines with ambient lighting technology inside a car, it enables clever features that make life easier for the driver,” said Christopher Eardley, Ford interior lighting engineer. “Ambient lighting can change interior accent color, but it can also add functionality that keeps a driver smiling.”

“Interior ambient lighting has transcended ‘looking cool’ and is poised to deliver additional customer value in the all-new Focus.”

The new Focus launches next year and will be available in the US starting at $16,270.
