As the Delle Chiaie family members tell NBC News, they used to judge people who got attacked by bison during visits to Yellowstone National Park. Until it happened to them, and they now have to pay for the damage to their rental car.
The mother and father say they were driving in the park’s Lamar Valley in Wyoming, when they stumbled into the middle of a stampede. As you can see in the video below, they started recording right away but they had no idea they were about to get so close to the animals.

At one point, a very large bison came right at their car – a rental – and hit it with all its strength. The animal didn’t appear to be hurt: if anything, it probably didn’t even notice the “bump” that was the car in its path. However, the Delle Chiaies now have to come up with the money for the repairs.

As the dad, Bruce, is heard saying in the video, they didn’t get insurance with the car rental, which means all damages to the vehicle while in their possession are covered out of their pocket. Naturally, they didn’t imagine that a bison would smash into them, but they’re probably regretting their decision now. As they say, it’s better safe than sorry.

The NBC News video has images of the damages to the car, a white SUV. The bison took out the side mirror, dented the hood and broke the windshield. It’s no wonder it was able to cause so much damage: bison are the largest land animal in North America and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. They can also reach pretty impressive speeds (about 35 mph) despite their relatively calm appearance and size.

National Park Service warns tourists to stay at least 25 yards away from any of the 4,500+ bison in Yellowstone. Bruce Delle Chiaie would like to add: and always get car insurance with your rental because you never know.
