If you want a mid-engine sports car without spending Ferrari money, the Porsche 718 does the job nicely. But ever since the German automaker went down the path of four-cylinder engine options for this model line, Alpine got back into the game with the A110.
“You mean that rear-wheel-drive Renault thing with the 1.8-liter turbocharged motor from the automaker’s hot hatchback?” Even more surprisingly, Alpine downtuned the engine to 252 PS and 320 Nm compared to the 300 PS and 420 Nm in the Megane RS Trophy.

Sooner rather than later, an A110 with a sportier chassis setup will enter production with 300 ponies and 50 fewer kilograms (110 pounds). For the time being, Alpine is celebrating the production of all First Edition models, numbering 1,955 copies.

The last example of the breed left the assembly line in Dieppe a few days ago, and the French company is now focused on ramping up production for the Pure and Legende trim levels. The target, according to the managing director of Alpine, is to level up production output to 20 vehicles per day (5,200 vehicles per year).

For the Pure, Alpine asks €54,700 in France. The Legende is €58,500, but how does the Porsche stack against the A110? The Cayman kicks off at €59,300 and the Boxster doesn’t go lower than €61,340. Even though the 718 has 300 PS from the get-go, the A110 accelerates quicker to 100 km/h (62 mph) thanks to the lower weight.

In other words, Alpine designed the two-door berlinette to be as performance-oriented as possible while Porsche chose a grand touring approach to the 718 series of models. As a consequence, the German interloper is more comfortable for daily driving than the A110.

There’s a rumor according to which Alpine prepares to roll out a sport utility vehicle in 2019, but nothing has been confirmed or spied to date. If the Renault-owned division does plan to introduce an SUV, we're expecting the Common Module Family platform from the Kadjar to serve as the starting point of the newcomer.
