Alpina XD3 Biturbo Review by Autocar

We already saw how Alpina's first SUV looks like, in the shape of the XD3 Biturbo model but we never got to see how it drives and get a hands on experience. The guys from Autocar did though, here's what they found.

On paper, the differences don't look that big. Actually, looking through what other tuners have to offer, you'll find that other are giving the 3-liter diesel engine found on the xDrive35d model even more horsepower.

Hartge, for example, are taking the N57 engine up to 362 HP but it's the chassis changes where the XD3 shines. Excepting the upgraded 8-speed gearbox and the increased power, all the aerodynamic changes and the new wheels, Alpina's creation has a great chassis.

That comes in handy every time you're about to tackle a corner also thanks to its 4-way working all-wheel-drive system, further improved by the German company. With a 0-62 mph sprint of 4.9 seconds, you'll need a proper sports car to blow it out of the water in a drag race.

Sure, the fuel efficiency is lower than a standard X3 but at 34.5 mpg (6.8 l/100 km) the numbers don't look bad at all. At the same time you have a special, deep growl accompanying you all the way, thanks to Akrapovic.

The interior is basically the same, with some Alpina improvements: some better looking leather, more premium finish and logos everywhere. The practicality didn't suffer at all, giving you exactly the same room as a regular X3.

Therefore, looking at the XD3, it's kind of hard to see why you'd go to some other SUV in the same segment. Then, you look at the price tag. Not everyone can afford it.
