This is one of the weirdest cars Alpina has made in the last couple of years. It's called the D5 S Allrad, and as you can see, it's based on the G30 5 Series sedan.
Usually, the goal of the Alpina series is to get as close as possible to the output of the M version of that car. But in this case, they couldn't do that because BMW doesn't make an M550d yet.
So Alpina made its own powertrain based on the B57 engine. It's a 3-liter with three turbochargers, two high-pressure ones and one low-pressure. By contrast, the latest BMW-made unit has four turbochargers, as seen in the 750d.
In left-hand drive markets, the D5 S packs 388 HP and 800 Nm of torque. However, the British version only has 326 HP, presumably because it's based on the 540d.
Performance is on par with the M550i, as the 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes 4.4 seconds. It's also got the same rear-biased AWD system and an 8-speed automatic ZF gearbox. Of course, all of these were tuned in-house, as was the suspension. Technically, this is the fastest diesel in the world with a top speed of 286 km/h, but we're not that impressed. A hot hatch with a good tune can do that too.
As far as the styling is concerned, everything seems to be the same as the B5. You've got new bumpers, wheels and other decorative trinkets. The main difference with this show car is that all its chrome got the shadow treatment. We especially like the way the bumper integrates the quad exhaust pipes. Changes to the interior aren't extensive, but Alpina has come up with its own graphics for the digital dash.
One of these babies will set you back €87,900 as a sedan or €90,400 for the practical F31 Touring-based model. You can spend more on a Porsche Cayman, so we think Alpina's diesels are acceptably priced.
