Alpina is eager to show us that diesel engines can truly serve as hearts of driving machines and has released the D5 Bi-Turbo, a project based on the BMW 5 Series, in order to do so.
So, let's start with the powerplant then. We are talking about a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight six unit that delivers 350 hp. The engine is mated to a ZF Switch-Tronic eight-speed automatic transmission that has also been touched by the German tuner.

Even though we get this level of power, Alpina claims that the we get the same fuel efficiency as we would in a 245 hp BMW 530d - 6.2 liters per 100 km, to be more precise.

This means that the performance hits an impressive level in general and especially if we consider that it comes via burning: the 0 to 62 mph sprint is death with in 5.2 seconds, while the top speed sits at 168 mph (270 km/h).

In order for the car to feel just as good in the handling area, Alpina has fitted the car with a lowered suspension, as well as with a set of Alpina Classic rims that come in a 20-inch size and are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (255/35 at the front and 285/30 at the rear).

Oh, and there's something we forgot to tell you. You can also have in the Touring (BMW language for wagon) incarnation.

Wait, wait... should we file this under "auto" or "tuning" ?
