Alonso: We'll Show Our True Pace Tomorrow

Although the Renault R29 behaved poorly during the Friday practice sessions at Shanghai, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso said he still feels strong heading towards the Saturday qualifying. The Spaniard revealed Renault did not focus on scoring good times today and only tomorrow's 3rd practice session will show the true pace of the R29 this weekend.

“Although we are at the bottom of the timesheets, I don't think we should be too worried as we concentrated more on race configuration today,” said Alonso, who recorded the 9th and 19th best times during the Friday practice sessions respectively.

“Tomorrow morning in the third free practice session we will be preparing for qualifying and so I think we can remain optimistic for the rest of the weekend. We need to try to reach Q3, as we did in Malaysia, and aim to score as many points as possible. I think overall today we struggled to find the right set-up, but even looking at the times, we still have high hopes for this weekend,” further announced Alonso.

The Renault driver revealed, during the course of yesterday, that the R29 will feature some new changes in terms of aerodynamic package for the China weekend, while also undergoing some mechanical adjustments to the rear suspension. The clear aim of those changes, as announced by Alonso, is getting both drivers into Q3 as soon as possible.

Alonso's teammate Nelsinho Piquet did not have a very promising day either, as the Brazilian recorded only the 20th and 16th best times respectively. The team focused most of their work during P2 on evaluating the behavior of super soft compound tires on the hot track at Shanghai.
