It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what the FIA based their proposed system on. It was the Ecclestone-lobbied “medal system”, aimed to predictably improve the on-track battle for the podium positions. In the meantime, the FOTA have come up with another system – based on the fans' survey – awarding the Top 3 drivers with some extra points (1st place – 12 points, 2nd place – 9 points, 3rd place – 7 points).
Although submitted to the FIA, this latter system was never even discussed by the World Motor Sport Council, who instead went for a mixed Ecclestone variant. And that's where Alonso steps in with his comments, insisting that fans' view should become way more important than the personal agenda of either Ecclestone or some members of the FIA.
“FOTA gave a list of proposals, and they were very clear. For me they were very clever proposals as well, listening to the fans. We all more or less agree that the winner has to have something more than he has now, so maybe the 12 points, nine, seven was the better compromise, and in a better direction for the future than the wins (system),” said Alonso.
“All the drivers and the teams think in that direction, so the FIA and Bernie cannot go against the world. If the fans, the drivers, the teams, they go in one direction, I think at the end they will follow that direction.”
“Formula 1 has been for more than 50 years one of the greatest sports ever, followed by millions of spectators around the world. We saw the last three world championships decided in the last race, even last year decided in the last corner, so we cannot be too crazy about finding more show for the people. The show is enough. We just need to find some continuity,” added the Spaniard.
