Alonso Trusts New Rules for 2011

Although the 2010 Formula One season has been one of the most thrilling in years, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) moved to implement further changes to the F1's technical rulebook in order to make the sport more entertaining for the fans. And by entertaining we mean an overtaking-like tendency for F1 racing from 2011 onwards.

Consequently, the 2011 season will bring with it a brand new adjustable rear wing device, which will help trailing cars into gaining the needed extra speed to be able to overtake the car in front. The system will behave much like the F-duct device in 2010, with the sole difference that the driver defending his position in the race will not be allowed to use it. Therefore, only the trailing drivers will get to adjust their rear wing for improved overtaking chances.

Additionally, the sport will witness the return of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), for which certain drivers have already started losing some weight (see the cases of Fernando Alonso and Rubens Barrichello).

Although KERS and the other overtaking-related rules have not delivered the expected results back in 2009, Ferrari's Alonso believes the new set of regulations for 2011 will have the desired success.

Obviously every year normally Formula 1 changes rules to make it more spectacular, to have more overtaking maneuvers and to have a better show,” said the Spaniard in an official interview on Ferrari's website.

It's true that in 2011 there are two big changes to the regulations, which is the KERS and the rear wing that we can move when we have an overtaking possibility. I think these two combined give us a speed advantage that is quite big compared to the car in front. So I'm confident that next year, finally, the rules will help overtaking and we will have a better show for everybody.

In addition to the two aforementioned changes, the 2-time world champion also put an emphasis on the new tires supplied by Pirelli for the 2011 season.

One of the most important is the tires, which normally change the behavior of the car, so we have to make sure that Pirelli is well coordinated with our car.

Then we have the KERS, which comes back from 2009, and in 2011 will be a very important tool for overtaking and also for performance. We need to find a way of preparing the car to use the KERS in the best way possible. Then there is the moveable rear wing, that will try to make a better show, but also is a new area to experiment and exploit for performance.
