Alonso Insures Life, Thumbs for EUR10 Million

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso has just insured his thumbs for 10 million euros, as confirmed by the Scuderia via an official statement on their website. The Spaniard was present in a media event with Ferrari's major backer Grupo Santander earlier today, held in Madrid, and was offered a life insurance to protect his thumbs by the Spanish group.

Fernando Alonso’s thumbs are safe. The Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver received as a present from Banco Santander a life insurance, including his thumbs, worth ten million Euros: this has been announced at the Banco Santander headquarters at Ciudad Financiera in Boadilla del Monte, near Madrid, this morning,” said a press release from Ferrari.

According to the statement, Alonso was joined at the press conference by Head of the Banca Commercial España Enrique Garcia Candela and Seguros y Banca Directa Global General Director Jorge Moran.

Being close to risk in my profession made me understand that protection is a fundamental aspect. I knew that Santander is the best bank in the world, but now I discovered that they are also leaders in insurances. So I could only choose one of the best possible partners in this field,” was Alonso's stance on his new insurance agreement.

The deal was signed to allegedly offer Alonso the possibility to “greet his fans at grands prix with positivity,” according to the GMM news agency. Accordingly, we should see the 2-time world champion a lot more optimistic before race weekends from now on, during the meetings he'll have with his fans.

Santander has followed Alonso at McLaren Mercedes when the Spaniard left Renault for the Woking based team in 2007, after which it became an official backer of Ferrari when the 2-time world champion signed a 3-year deal with the Scuderia.
