Alonso and Trulli Accuse FIA of Chaotic Rules

The revised title-awarding system introduced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) for the upcoming season seems to have sparked a bit of controversy within the F1 paddock. Not that we weren't expecting it or anything, but it seems that the number of people slamming the sporting regulations grows by the day.

After Jenson Button, another couple of F1 drivers – highly experienced, we might add – Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli expressed their disagreement with the new rules. Much like the aforementioned British driver, the duo believes the new win-based system will only cause more chaos within the fans.

“I don't understand the need to constantly change the rules of this sport. I think that these types of decisions can only confuse the fans,” pointed out the Renault 2-time world champion, according to GMM news agency. Also, he expressed his disappointment on the fact that FIA didn't consult the drivers of the teams when ratifying the new set of rules.

Trulli had a more aggressive approach on the matter, accusing the World Motor Sport Council (FIA's ruling body) that they are killing the very essence of the sport. He argued that the medal-hybrid system agreed upon by the WMSC will make the sport even more predictable, with the fight for the championship terminating way before the last chequered flag of the season.

“It seems to be that formula one wants to die and we will all have to go and race in some other championship. It is right to try to give the public more, to improve the show, but it shouldn't distort the spirit of formula one. I am very, very worried,” Trulli was quoted as saying to Italian newspaper La Stampa.

Under the new rules, the 2009 F1 championship will not be awarded to the driver with the most points in the overall classification, but to the one having scored the most wins throughout the season. The points will only count if two drivers end the series with the same number of wins.

In an interview for IRL official website, former F1 driver Michael Andretti was also critic of F1's new regulations.

“A champion is the guy that's been the most consistent throughout the year. I think that's how you should be rewarded. I'm not sure if I totally agree with that,” argued Andretti.
