Saying that the Yamaha R6 is overdue for an update is an understatement, but it looks like Iwata is finally planning a revamping for their supersport machine. The first rumors arrive from Japan, where the Young Machines magazine published a rendering of what is believed to be the 2017 R6.
Now, this magazine has been right on some occasions, but from this to saying that Yamaha will use the design of their flagship YZF-R1 for the new R6 is a long shot. However, the most important news is the fact that the R6 is not going to spend one more year without being updated.

The rendering is more like an R1 with the added bodywork details of the current R6, with the distinctive diagonal line running from the headlight to the middle section. As for the rest, the virtual R6 is quite similar to its bigger sibling, and the design includes the "take it or leave it" dual headlight of the R1.

It's too early to say anything about the R6, but we'd rather say that such an approach would only be unimaginative. Having two bikes that look the same is a rather dull solution, and we do hope that Yamaha will still design the new R6 to be different from the R1, just like in the old days.

Rumors say that it is unlikely that Yamaha made a supersport bike with a bigger displacement, despite the general trend in the industry. It looks like Iwata is still happy with how the bike stacks in the competitions around the world and will prefer to remain in the 600cc zone.

There is no news on the engine, but we guess that the new YZF-R6 will arrive with a good dose of electronic enhancements, such as multi-level traction control, wheelie mitigation and other IMU-based gimmicks, ABS, and possibly optional semi-active suspensions.

The supersport segment is not doing particularly well on a global scale, but at least, it is not dying.
