The Volkswagen Tiguan is in the news today, as British media is informing us that the iconic German crossover is due for a third generation. This is supposed to come out in 2022 and have the coupe styling that was promised but never delivered.
More specifically, Auto Express says that a new Tiguan will debut three years from now with a variety of features and changes shared with the upcoming Golf 8. The current generation's body styling was so unsuccessful that it will reportedly get the coupe treatment. However, we don't but any of this.
First of all, the new Tiguan may not be a beauty queen, but it's a sharp dresser. Sales are pretty good: 250,000 last year in Europe. Compare that with 70,000 for the sexier Mazda CX-5 and you realize Volkswagen has nothing to fix here.
Secondly, Volkswagen did deliver a Tiguan coupe. It just showed a pre-production concept that will be made by FAW by the end of the year. China has many more SUVs the rest of the world doesn't get, like the Tayron, Tharu, SMV and the Jetta SUV. In addition to that, we have MQB-based pickups like the Tanoak and Tarok, so there's no need to blow money on the Tiguan.
Speaking of which, Volkswagen is in the middle of a massive EV assault, so the current Tiguan generation should be eight years long with a facelift in the middle. Our source talks about new powertrains as well.
Supposedly, the Tiguan R has been approved and will debut later in 2019, while the all-new performance model for the next generation is supposed to have 350 HP from a 2-liter turbo. And like most automakers, VW is looking to expand into plug-in hybrids with two Tiguan-based models packing about 170 and 250 HP, respectively. Again, this is something that's already happened in China, so the story doesn't check out.
