All-New Volvo XC90 Interior Revealed

The first Volvo XC90 was launched in 2002 and was the firm's first-ever full-size 4x4. It remains to this day a family-friendly vehicle and in true Volvo tradition, one of the safest cars on the road.. Now there's a new one coming and the automaker has begun the slow teasing process with photos and details of its interior.

This new XC90 has become so much more than a place to shove Swedish flatpack furniture into. It's a nice place to be, comparable to a Mercedes… or maybe a Tesla Model S?

The new cabin looks almost exactly like that of the Concept Estate they showed in Geneva. Gone is the floating dash design, replaced with a Range-Rover like center console and huge portrait-shaped next-gen infotainment system. Every button, every knob is designed to be more user-friendly and simple, allowing the driver to better concentrate on the road.

The CX90 features fine leather, beautifully aged wood trim and a new crystal glass gear selector which reminds us of Aston Martin's manuals. The steering wheel design is inspired by the legendary 1800 coupe, an icon that most people normally associate with the Swedish brand, thanks to the role it played in The Saint.

"Using elements from their exterior and interior has nothing to do with being retro. We are using these subtle links to a glorious past to create a future in which sheer beauty becomes a recognized part of Volvo’s identity,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars.

When launched in August, the new XC90 will be offered with A four-zone climate control, a three-row configuration and Apple CarPlay technology. An all-new platform developed in-hose by Volvo will be combined with their smoothest and most efficient engines yet. Acting as a true flagship from Europe's North, the XC90 will be quite big at 4.9 meters long, 100mm longer than the outgoing model.

The Drive-E family of EU6 compliant engines will provide plenty of power to this vehicle. The Swedes have already developed a new T6 2-liter that's both turbocharged and supercharged, thus being able to do the job an older 3-liter could. A plug-in hybrid also seems extremely likely to be produced, either with a diesel or performance petrol engine.

Most European buyers will probably go for cheaper and simpler powertrain solutions. New D4 and D5 diesels will offer bountiful low-end torque and 182 or 218 horsepower, respectively.
