Volkswagen had dropped an interesting teaser video for the highly anticipated T6 generation of the Transporter series of commercial vehicles.
They're not showing us much, but we can see precisely what we needed to: there are direct links between the T6's design and VW road cars, especially the Passat.
The full-LED headlights look similar to what we've seen on the Tristar concept car earlier this year while the revised rear lights suggest this new model is based on the older T5.
The T6 is part of a 50-strong list of debuts Volkswagen has planned for 2015. These include key models such as the Touran, the Audi Q7 and Audi A4, the Porsche 911 and Porsche Boxster Spyder, the ŠKODA Superb and the SEAT Ibiza.
It's believed the Tristar concept served as a preview, not only for the T6 design, but also for the engines available. It was powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel good for 204 HP and 450 Nm (331 lb-ft), similar to what's under the Amarok pickup's bonnet. There should also be less powerful versions with a single turbocharger, and we may even see a new DSG gearbox.
Commercial vehicles are going upmarket, just like we've seen with the Mercedes V-Class. With the new Caddy van, Volkswagen designers have already shown they can keep up with the times. The T6 Caravelle model could have everything from Vienna leather upholstery to the infotainment system and comfort features from the Passat sedan. We'll know more tomorrow, so stay tuned.
