Vauxhall has just announced base pricing information for the all-new Astra hatchback, the 2016 model year. This hatchback competitor for the Focus and Golf will begin at £15,295 OTR, which means it's cheaper than the outgoing model by about £150.
The base version of the car Astra is equipped with a 1-liter three-cylinder turbo engine that replaces the old 1.6. It's a punchy little thing that delivers better torque. Standard kit includes 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, 6 airbags, air conditioning and a 7-inch color display.

The £15,295 Astra will also get electric windows at all corners and cruise control functions. What's the most expensive Astra you can buy? That's the range-topping n SRi trim priced from £20,435 on-the-road. It is equipped with a 1.6-liter turbo making 200 PS, 17-inch wheels, sports seats, a leather steering wheel and fog lights.

Built at the Vauxhall’s manufacturing plant in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, the new Astra will also get one diesel engine at launch. It's a carryover 1.6-liter Whisper Diesel (110PS) with Start/Stop that is supposed to emit only 82 grams per kilometer.

Arriving in UK showrooms this October, the Astra will be sold in Design, Tech Line, Energy, SRi and Elite trims, with Nav versions of the SRi and Elite trims also available.

We think Vauxhall have done their homework right with this car. It doesn't try to be as sophisticated as some of its rivals. Instead, they've focused on reducing weight and the overall proportions of the car without compromising space. Looks are entire subjective, but I think you'll agree this is an improvement.

According to the car company's previous statements, the 2016 Vauxhall Astra K is 4.37 meters long (roughly 5 cm shorter than its predecessor). They also tell us that the lightweight vehicle architecture ensures weight savings of 120 to 200 kg (264 - 441 lbs) depending on the model and trim level. It will be interesting to see how that translates into performance for the 200 horsepower warm hatch.
