All-New Honda Civic Will Debut in Fall 2015 with 40 MPG, Dropping Hybrid and CNG

The all-new Honda Civic is a big deal if you have $20,000 to spend to a fun-to-drive sedan or coupe. Today, American Honda Motor Executive Vice President John Mendel released a statement saying that the next-gen compact will debut this fall.
In a move that many have predicted already, Honda is going to drop the Civic CNG and Hybrid. Both models have been selling poorly and needed incentives to leave the dealership doors. To replace them the 2016/2017 Civic will feature a new engine that will return more than 40 mpg highway.

The arrival of a 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo has long been rumored and the time is right for such a model. Both the Dodge Dart and the Ford Focus offer smaller turbocharged engines that have been praised for their torque and efficiency.

The all-new Civic is said to "deliver fun-to-drive performance in concert with top-in-class fuel efficiency and safety."

We expect that the place of the Civic Hybrid will be taken by a bespoke hybrid model, such as the successor of the CR-Z. It many also use the 1.5-liter turbo in combination with a bigger electric motor.

It seems the increased efficiency of conventional engines is hurting sales of greener models. The Honda Vice President also announced that the Accord plug-in hybrid will be dropped. This is one of the youngest models in the range. In April 2015, it was announced that production was going to be relocated from Ohio to Japan, so other markets are not going to be affected by the decision.

In place of the Accord PHEV, Honda will eventually offer a specialized plug-in model. Considering how futuristic their designs have been, we're eager to something that's just as funky as their FCV.
