With new cars coming out each month, it's difficult to keep track of what's what, but the 2019 BMW 3 Series is a big debut. And while the Touring model is going to become a footnote, we're still excited to see it all fleshed out.
The 3 Series Touring is, in our mind, a car that makes a lot of sense, practically the most amount of BMW practicality you can get at an "affordable" price. It's even got things that the competition lacks, like that split-opening trunk or... driving thrills.
The 3 Series sedan will probably come out within a month, but the Touring model will have to wait until next year. That' why this prototype is so heavily camouflaged while taking on the mighty Nurburgring. Still, we can make out that it doesn't have the M Sport look and probably has a powertrain called "330."
The rear shows double exhaust pipes, but the front has small intakes, so it's either got the 330d base 3-liter diesel with 265 HP or what BMW calls "the most powerful four-cylinder it's ever built" with roughly 280 ponies. Of course, even the simplest versions of the car will be better than before, faster yet slightly more economical.
Above that, the 3 Series Touring will have the really interesting stuff, wearing M Performance badges. These will come in the form of a 326 HP twin-turbo diesel in the M340d and the 360 HP unit of the M340i. There's no chance of an M3 wagon, but the two models mentioned above will be the most powerful ever fitted to the car.
Of course, everything will be built around an all-new platform, derived from that of the 5 Series. We know that the 3er sedan will have near 50/50 weight distribution, a center of gravity that's 10mm lower and 55kg less weight on average. These are amazing specs for a segment that seems to forget why people buy German: tech and performance.
