All-New Audi R8 Launching in Britain: V10 Supercar Costs 911 Turbo Money

Shortly after making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2015, the brand new Audi R8 V10 supercar is making its way into British showrooms, where it will be available for order at the beginning of May this year.

No longer available with a V8 engine or a manual gearbox, the Mk2 R8 is now to be considered a true performance car and borrows many features from the Lamborghini Huracan, including its chassis. Around 50 kilograms of weight (110 lbs) have been shaved off the car while body rigidity has increased by 40%.

Full pricing information has been revealed today and we think Audi closely mirrored the Porsche 911 range. A base model R8 V10 has been priced from £119,500 OTR, which makes it almost exactly the same as the normal 911 Turbo (£120,500, a difference of only £1,000).

Both have all-wheel drive and twin-clutch gearboxes. But while the Porsche has a six-cylinder twin-turbo engine, Audi's quattro beast has a 540 PS version of the familiar V10 engine. For this reason, performance is similar to that of the RS7, but there's also a track-focused R8 V10 Plus model which has exactly the same 610 PS output as the Huracan.

This is the fastest Audi ever put into production with 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds, 0-124mph in 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 205mph. Pricing will start from £137,500 in Britain, which would make this a competitor for the £142,000 Porsche 911 Turbo S.

There's no question that the 911 is a more beautiful car, even if it's somewhat discrete. But the Audi boffins have given the R8 all their latest tech to ensure it sells. This includes virtual cockpit, Audi drive select, Audi connect with standard internet services and front/rear park assist.

Many options are going to be available, most likely bumping up the price closer to £200,000 for customers of means. However, the most interesting one has to be the laser headlight system.  Numerous interior upgrades and color combinations for the body and side blades can also be added to personalize this German Lamborghini. Unfortunately, no configurator is available at the moment.
