All-Naked Mugen Shinden-San Electric Superbike

Its’ rather seldom when electric bike manufacturers go stripping their machines of the bodywork, and this is because the bikes usually have certain more or less secret features or encompass various engineering solutions which are best kept away from inquisitive eyes.

Still, Team Mugen decided to allow fans and media to take a glimpse beneath the thunderbolt-adorned fairings of their recently-introduced Shinden-San electric superbike. Mugen will field two such bikes in this year’s TT Zero in the Isle of Man, with legendary John McGuinness and Bruce Anstey at the helm, hoping for an 115 mph (185 km/h) lap around the Mountain.

The Shinden-San is built almost entirely from carbon fiber, to compensate for the weight of the battery pack, and this means that both the frame and the swingarm, alongside with a heap of other parts are ultra-light and exceptionally strong, just like an ideal race bike should be. The battery size is impressive, as it takes pretty much all the space underneath the fairing.

The energy pack feeds a 370V 3-phase motor provided by Mission, touted to deliver 134hp. The brushless motor is a single-speed unit, so McGuinness and Anstey will not have to deal with shifting and clutch work. In fact, the left-bar lever is the rear brake. If you look closely, you’ll observe the Shinden-San only has pegs and no other foot-actuated levers.

With Honda involved in the project on a high level, it was only natural seeing the Team Mugen Shinden-San loaded with Showa suspensions and Nissin brakes. And it looks like the electric bikes are closer by the year to the petrol machines in racing events… which spells a truly interesting future for the industry. Plus, you now know how to write Mr. Pint's and Bruce's names in Japanese...
